The University of Aberdeen and University of St Andrews will be hosting the
World Conference on Marine Biodiversity 26-30 September 2011 at the Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre in Aberdeen. Speakers includeJean-Michel Cousteau, marine explorer, environmentalist, educator and film-maker, and Jacqueline McGlade, Director of the European Environment Agency.
The conference aims to:
- Review our knowledge of marine biodiversity and its role in marine ecosystem functioning
- Assess the most critical threats to marine systems and consider management strategies
- Discuss sustainable development and socio-economic impacts on the marine sector
- Identify future research priorities
The aim is to reach the widest possible groups of participants and stakeholders, from academics to industry, and will include elements specifically targeted at the public and school children. The conference will have an interdisciplinary focus and is organised into generic themes rather than by species or habitats to maximise interdisciplinary linkages.
Some public events will also be held in St Andrews [see the
full programme].
