The Sir Jules Thorn Award for Biomedical Research

The The Sir Jules Thorn Charitable Trust are keen to encourage applications from a wide cross-section of institutions engaged in translational biomedical research.

The annual Biomedical Research award provides a grant of up to £1.25 million to support a five-year programme of translational biomedical research selected following a competition among applicants sponsored by the leading UK medical schools and NHS organisations. Previous recipients of the award are listed on the Trust website.  The criteria, application process and timetable for the competition are given in the Guidance Notes.  The competition for the 2013 award will open at the end of this month.

The Sir Jules Thorn Charitable Trust was founded and endowed in 1964 by the industrialist Sir Jules Thorn. From a small company which he started in the 1920's, Sir Jules built an extraordinary business empire through exceptional talent, energy and enthusiasm. A great humanitarian, it was typical of Sir Jules that he should wish to help others, and he found as much fulfilment through his charitable trust as he did from building Thorn Electrical Industries. Sir Jules was involved personally in the distributions made to charitable causes until his death in 1980, since when the continuing Board of Trustees has sought to sustain Sir Jules’ legacy.
